The Association of Local Government of Nigeria is urging for a standardized four-year tenure for all elected local government officials nationwide.
ALGON’s National President, Aminu Muazu-Maifata, emphasized the need for this reform in an interview in Lafia, stressing its potential to enhance good governance and quality representation at the grassroots level.
Muazu-Maifata appealed to the National Assembly to expedite the amendment of the constitution, harmonizing the tenure of local government officials across the country, according to Nigerian Tribune.
He believes a four-year tenure would enable officials to fulfill their campaign promises and deliver meaningful impact to their constituents.
This call aims to bring consistency and stability to local governance, allowing officials to effectively implement their vision and improve the lives of citizens at the grassroots level.
“The tenure of local government officials should be made four years to enable us deliver on our campaign promises to the electorate.
“It is unfortunate that the tenure of local government officials in some states is even one or two years.
“So, I wonder how these officials will deliver good governance within such a short period,” he lamented.
