A’Ibom gov defends conversion of state properties for commercial use

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has addressed concerns about his administration’s investment in converting moribund state-owned buildings in Lagos and Abuja into commercial properties.

During the July edition of the Government House monthly prayer service, Eno explained that the investments are intended to generate income for the state and secure its future.

Eno stated, “We will continue to invest in Akwa Ibom. Every investment we are doing is carefully planned. We don’t just wake up to do it. We take our time to analyze it. That’s why AKICORP is there. We need to invest for our State, our future, and we are very intentional about things.”

He emphasized that the investments will not divert attention from rural development, but rather ensure a sustainable future for the state. Eno noted that the state-owned properties in Lagos and Abuja were previously unutilized and at risk of being revoked by the government due to abandonment.

Eno assured that the investments are for the benefit of the state and its people, saying, “I am not doing it in my name. It is for the State. We need to benefit from the real estate market in this country, which is very profitable, and that is why we are investing in it.”

He also addressed concerns about food security, stating that the Bulk purchase/food voucher programme is ongoing and will be expanded in August. Eno encouraged citizens to engage in farming and utilize the state government’s agricultural support programs to ensure food sufficiency.

Regarding the upcoming local government elections, Eno appealed for peaceful conduct and respect for zoning, urging support for aspirants who can deliver democracy dividends.
