The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission has assured its adhoc staff who participated in the November 2, 2024, local government elections that their entitlements will be paid soon.
This statement follows concerns raised over the delay in payment, which has persisted for more than a month after the elections.
ABSIEC urged the public to disregard what it called misleading information being spread by individuals allegedly mobilizing youths to protest the delay in payments, according to Daily Post.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the matter promptly and dispelling rumors suggesting that the workers would not be compensated.
In a statement released by Afulike Don Christian, Special Assistant to the ABSIEC Chairman on Communication, Planning, and Strategy, the Commission described the claims of non-payment as baseless.
It stated that the accounts department had finalized arrangements with its lead bank to credit the accounts of the affected staff within hours.
The Commission reiterated its adherence to the “New Abia” agenda, which emphasizes fairness and ensuring that all workers receive their due wages without fail. It expressed its commitment to fulfilling its obligations to those who contributed to the successful conduct of the local government elections.
“The commission wishes to state that its account department has already finalized plans with the lead bank of the Commission to credit the concerned individual accounts in the next few hours from now,” he said.
The Commission further said that it operates on the platform of “new Abia mantra where every worker that deserves his or her wages must be paid”.
