The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Brigadier General Godwin Abbe (retired), describing it as a significant loss to Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.
In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Senator Akpabio hailed General Abbe as a “dedicated public servant, patriot, and trailblazer” who made invaluable contributions to the progress of both Akwa Ibom State and the nation.
Reflecting on Abbe’s career, which included serving as the military Governor of Rivers State, Minister of Defence, and Minister of Interior, Akpabio stated, “His demise is a great loss not only to his family and the people of Akwa Ibom State but to the entire nation. His legacy of selfless service, integrity, and leadership will continue to inspire future generations.”
On behalf of his family, Akpabio extended heartfelt condolences to General Abbe’s family, as well as the government and people of Akwa Ibom State. He prayed for divine strength for those grieving the loss.
Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, also mourned General Abbe, likening his death to the fall of an Iroko tree, signifying the loss of a national hero.
In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark described Abbe as an “uncommon patriot” who served both the military and civilian governments with discipline, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the country.
“General Abbe was a great soldier, one of the leading lights in the Armed Forces of Nigeria. In all the assignments he handled, he demonstrated unwavering commitment, dedication, and patriotism,” Mark stated.
Highlighting Abbe’s tenure as a military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, Mark noted that Abbe left an enduring legacy of achievements. He also commended Abbe’s exemplary service as General Officer Commanding, Commandant of the Nigerian Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, and Commandant of the National War College (now National Defence College), where he upheld the highest military standards.
Mark further remarked, “He was Nigeria’s Minister of Defence with a difference. He was a leader of leaders.” He lamented that Abbe’s passing has created a void that will be challenging to fill.
The former Senate President concluded by praying for General Abbe’s soul to rest in peace and for his family to find the fortitude to bear the loss.
