The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has declared its intention to produce more state governors and reclaim power at the center in 2027.
The party’s National Working Committee, in a statement by Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, made the declaration during a visit to Governor Diri at his country home in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, yesterday.
Speaking on behalf of the NWC, National Treasurer Ahmed Yayare emphasized that the widespread economic hardship across Nigeria had created significant disenchantment, paving the way for the PDP to take control of more states and the federal government.
“The PDP is the only viable opposition party that can wrest power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027,” Yayare said. “If PDP does not take over leadership, it could mark the end of democracy in Nigeria. The cry of hunger and poverty is loud across the 36 states of Nigeria. The APC cannot campaign without facing backlash. Nigeria is in your hands. We need your support to salvage the nation.”
Yayare assured that the NWC was prepared to embark on extensive campaigns in PDP-controlled states to garner support ahead of the 2027 elections and urged the governors to unite in achieving their goals.
PDP National Secretary Ude Okoye reiterated that the NWC was committed to repositioning the party, demonstrating that the PDP could offer quality leadership and become the preferred choice for Nigerians.
“We will ensure respect for the party and its governors,” Okoye said. “Governor Diri’s exemplary leadership in Bayelsa is a model for the PDP. We are very proud of him.”
In his response, Governor Diri stressed the importance of unity among party members, emphasizing that as opposition governors, they must prioritize the party’s interests above personal grievances.
“We must work closely together,” Diri said. “It’s not always right to resort to court whenever there’s a disagreement. We must do what is right. If PDP dies in our hands, posterity will not forgive us.”
Diri assured the NWC of his unwavering support, underscoring that his commitment was to the party, not to personal political ambitions.
“If anyone is bigger than the party, let them leave. It is the PDP that has made most of us. We cannot be in PDP during the day and belong to another party at night. We need in-house reforms.”
Diri also expressed support for the idea of forming a mega party, with PDP playing a prominent role, to reclaim power at the center and address Nigeria’s current challenges.
“We need to strengthen our party to salvage Nigeria from its current situation,” Diri said.
