The Labour Party has continued to consolidate the loyalty of its Obidient supporters, despite growing factionalism within the movement.
Vanguard reported that a faction of the Obidient movement is planning to abandon the LP in favour of another political platform. However, the party’s Directorate of Mobilization and Integration has fortified its grassroots structure, a move expected to mitigate any significant impact from this factional shift.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Meche Oswald, a Labour Party chieftain and Coordinator of the Obidient Youth Ambassadors, expressed confidence in the DMI’s ability to maintain the party’s dominance at the grassroots level. He credited LP Chairman Barrister Abure and DMI Director-General Marcel Ngogbehei for their foresight in building a robust political structure.
“The Labour Party’s DMI has been able to coordinate the support groups in the party, commanding about 75 percent loyalty from the groups across the country,” Oswald said.
The DMI has reportedly established state and local government coordinators across Nigeria, a strategic move aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots presence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Oswald highlighted the Labour Party’s growing capacity to mobilise volunteers for future electoral contests. “The Labour Party platform in 2027 will boast of massive numbers of volunteers willing to work and support the Party’s candidates across board,” he said.
He also dismissed the potential influence of any factionalised Obidient movement, asserting that the LP’s extensive grassroots presence would make it exceedingly difficult for rival platforms to gain traction.
“With DMI’s extensive grassroots presence in every community across Nigeria, it will be extremely challenging for the factionalised Obidient movement to promote any other political platform,” Oswald boasted.
The Labour Party’s efforts to consolidate its grassroots support reflect its determination to remain a formidable force in Nigerian politics. By leveraging its extensive network and the loyalty of its supporters, the party aims to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 elections, despite internal and external challenges.
